Erri-Comfort® Cowmatresses | Healthy Cows

• The most important requirement for a cow barn, new build or old, is to give the cows comfort for a cow.

Erri-Comfort is developed by Jørn Erri, based on many years overwhelming interest for dairy cows together with practice experiences from a life as a working vet and active dairy farmer.

• The cows were looking tired and sad, they would stand and hung, they didn’t get enough rest and they were generally exhausted and were very vulnerable to all kind of diseases. For that reason, the purpose with the Erri-Comfort cow mattress has been to improve the conditions for the cow, to secure a better wellbeing, less diseases and then automatically increase milk production and a better economy.
• Today Jørn Erri believes that the most important element to prevent diseases is to give the
  cows comfort, so that they can get the rest, they need, and this is possible by offering the cows a clean and soft bed to rest upon.

• 25 years of experience has shown, that when the wellbeing for the cows is improve, the milk production increases, and the renewal of the herd is reduced.
• Erri-Comfort leads to higher yield, less mastitis, far less leg injuries, the legs will be clean and fine, together with the well-known experience, that when the cows durability is improved, the renewal is reduced.
• Erri-Comfort furthermore makes it possible to start using a new barn without losing any cows.

• Longer time the cows are laying leads to higher yield – our costumers claim up to 3 kg more milk per day!
• It is now generally accepted, that milk production raises proportionally with the time the cow is laying. When a cow is laying, 50% more blood is running through the udder, compared to when the cow stands. The production of 1 liter of milk requires 500 liters of blood runs through the udder.

 To produce Erri-Comfort New Generation, the product polyethylene is used. Polyethylene consists of closed cells. In that way the product separates from other products like foam rubber. Polyethylene is resistant to the ammonia in the environment of the barn, the closed cells do, that the mattresses doesn’t collapse and get flat.

•  Polyethylene is used as shock absorber at casting and transport of for example windmills and storage and shipment of fragile and high-tech products. These are often shipped laying in a shaped form of polyethylene, with the purpose to absorb bumps and bruises.
• Left over from the cutting of the forms is bought by Erri-Comfort and is granulated by special made machines. Afterwards the granulate is then pressed into tubes that is woven together in bags. The bags are then laid in band, and a top cover is dragged over the bags. This secure a proper use of the material that has been cut off, otherwise it would be disposed be the incinerator.

•  We want to make it clear, that how Erri-Comfort is made is a result of very serious considerations, based from a good old-fashioned wish in a veterinarian perspective, to in the best way to take care of the cow and to secure the interest of clients in the the best way.
• Out all over covering desire is to created the best possible conditions for the cows, the environment and the clients as well.

•  If we thought that the cows could be as well with a thinner mattress. It would be the easiest thing for us to produce a thinner mattress, that would be cheaper as well.
• We would only have to use half the amount of polyethylene, that is quite expensive. Another thing is that the whole process of making the bags wouldn’t be as heavy and less cost for the automation.

•  Likewise, it would be easy for us to get a non-penetrable topcover.
  Again, we would like to highlight that our choice of a penetrable topcover is a result of very serious considerations, and it is our opinion that it is a benefit for the cow and as all well for the dairy farmer.
• Our costumers report back, that they really feel that the Erri-Comfort mattress makes a significant improvement, that goes also for the use of straw and the burden of labor. This makes us very satisfied, because we believe that the burden of labour, that is upon the dairy farmers is already plenty.
• We fully believe in a penetrable topcover, because it´s our opinion that it´s very vital to always provide the cows with a dry bed.
  A use a non-penetrable topcover, requires a large amount of straw and a lot of labour on a daily basis to secure that the cow doesn’t lay down in ponds of milk, sweat, urine and furthermore, that can give perfect conditions for the growth of bacteria and in that way increase the danger for mastitis and further more.

 The formation of a pond on a mattress gives bacteria the optimal conditions for growth. In order to prevent that the surface on a non-permeable mattress will not turn into a bacteria-bomb it is necessary to use a large amount of chopped straw or sawdust, otherwise the cows will lay in a
culture of bacteria.

 The well-being of the cows increases when they have a hollow to lay in. In organic farms it is a demand, that the cows have a bed where they can make a shape. A hollow is also an advantage because the cows are laying straight in the cubicles, which prevent them to injure the teats on other cows.”It also makes it easier to keep the cubicles clean” (cit. •  We use a large amount of” filling” in the mattresses, we do this it order to secure, that the Erri Comfort mattress from the start is the softest, but also – what is the most important – it remains soft.
• A lot of research shows that Erri-Comfort is the absolutely thickest and softest madras on the market, and that it maintains the softness. Practical experiences show the same, Erri-Comfort is more soft than other mattresses on the market.
